Holiday 2013 - Episode 3 - Back in Copenhagen

Episode 3 - Back in Copenhagen

Back in Copenhagen, next day we had lunch in a very nice restaurant, then did some sight seeing round the town ending up in the King’s Garden where we explored and took photos.

We also found this damsel in the bushes!

In the evening we went into town again with Ulla to meet up with their daughter Karis and son Justin for a meal. It was very nice – it was a vegetarian restaurant but you could have meat side dishes! That’s a new slant, chuckle! Afterwards we went to an old bar for another drink before coming home on the train. (Notice that everybody sits outside the bars in Denmark, so they supply blankets for the cooler evenings!)

A typical Copenhagen street - this one was for cycles only!
Next day it was raining quite hard when we got up. (This was one of the 2 or 3 rainy days we had in the whole 2 months we were away!) When it eased up about 10am, we put on our wet gear and walked down to Hellerup town and continued down to the little port to look at the boats.

This sign made us chuckle! In English it means Hellerup Boat Service!
Then we walked along the High street until it started to really pour again, so popped into a café for chocolate croissants and coffees – yummy!. By the time we had finished, it had eased up a bit, so we continued to walk right along the high street until we came to an old fort which had been built in the late 1800s to protect Copenhagen from invaders from the sea. It was quite interesting and there was also a lovely park there.

It had been quite a long walk and by now was about 12.30pm so we went into the little café for a bit of lunch.

Afterwards we walked back along the other side of the high street (different shops, chuckle!) and also followed a sign to the Oergord museum. It was a nice walk through another park with a little river running through it, but the museum was closed for renovations.

For dinner that evening we had salmon with Ulla’s special sauce, green beans and lovely new potatoes - and more wine, chuckle!

The following day we wandered through a part of town we hadn’t been to before and found the big canal (lake) where we sat and had our picnic lunch near an old Pavilion and watched the big white swans.

The swans came to see if we had any lunch left for them!

In the afternoon we found some more streets and other things we hadn’t seen before.

After a cuppa and a chat back at Steve's, he took us in the car up the coast and through some very quaint seaside villages until we came to a fairly large harbour for big expensive boats. It was very interesting and a good place for a beer, chuckle! There were lots of cafes and restuarants. After the beer we decided to have pizzas in the Italian restaurant next door.

They were very good pizzas but we all ate too much and once again Mike had a little too much to drink and I wasn’t far behind! Ulla, who had been unable to come due to other committments, was home when we got back so another glass of wine and more chatting until bedtime.

Next day was our last day with Steve and Ulla and they took us for a ride north of Copenhagen. We went to the huge Frederiksborg Castle in Hillerød. It was very lovely but we didn’t have time to go inside as it was such a big place. After that Steve drove to the East side and we went through some lovely little seaside towns and had a lovely lunch at Gilleleje and walked through the town afterwards where they had a market.

Unfortunately we have somehow lost or accidentally deleted the photos of this outing, which is a great shame as the castle and the food were fantastic and we had some good shots of both! However I've just found some photos of the castle on the net so this will give you some idea.

After that we drove back to Copenhagen as we needed to get ready for Ulla’s Uncle’s 75 birthday party. We went by train and got there about 4.30pm. It was just Ulla’s family and some close friends and there were about 20 in all counting the smaller children. Karis and Justin were also there. We had drinks outside first, then went in for lots of lovely food! It then poured with rain while we were indoors and there was a lot of high winds, but after we had finished eating, it stopped raining and we were able to sit outside again! The evenings are so light that we didn’t leave til about 11pm to catch the train back to Hellerup. It was a very good party and  we were very warmly welcomed.
Once again we have no photos as it was  the same day as our afternoon trip out, but if Steve manages to get some from the family, I will upload them later.

Episode 4 - our sojourn in Goettingen, Germany - should be uploaded fairly soon I hope.
